Iftar at Blue Diamond

Iftar at Blue Diamond

How would you feel if idly was no longer available in Chennai!?! Or if all those who served idly started serving another dish from Hyderabad!?! Something similar is happening to the humble 'Nombu Kanji' or Rice Soup that was forever the source of first sip to cool down the fasting stomach! Loaded with rice, spices, but still mild enough, the Rice Kanji was something that most people fasting in Chennai, grew up with. Now, its fancy cousin from Hyderabad, the Haleem has made this a push over. But even today in most mosques, you do get this. Besides the mosques, I believe the only restaurant still serving it, is Jewelbox at Blue Diamond. After a couple of disastrous fast breaking attempt with a combination of poorly planned menus and atrocious food for days 2 and 3 (day 1 is always at home slurp), my fourth Iftar (fast breaking time) at Blue Diamond was a saviour for the tummy. Last year, the combo was ridiculously priced at Rs. 125, but this year, it has changed wit

Wazwan Festival, Hyatt Regency

Wazwan Festival, Hyatt Regency

As we head into the month of fasting, Hyatt has a very tempting festival going on! Kashmiri. Now, Kashmiri cuisine is a little different. Obviously, I know. We are in Tamil Nadu, the southern most state and we are talking about a cuisine from the northern most state and obviously it has to be different. A few years back, a restaurant called Jaawaids Kebabs and Kurries attempted to serve Kashmiri and failed miserably and the restaurant shut down and after that, I don't think anybody has attempted it. Hyatt, flew in a Kashmiri chef from, duh, Kashmir, Chef Bashir Ahmad, invited a bunch of us on the first day for the festival that is on till the 21st of this month. Now, I got some taste of Kashmir from my friend during my early days in Apollo hospitals and gladly, Hyatt has got it similar. Kashmiri cuisine has this Trami , (not sure of the spelling), which is like a community plate which serves almost four people and it is like a community thaali . Here of course,

Nicky's Fine Baking and Cafe

Nicky's Fine Baking and Cafe

When someone tells me that there is a vegetarian version of a non veg dish that I must try, I look up. When it comes from a hard core foodie who is a pure non vegetarian, then my brain is deciding when, how and who to go with. When the guy says he is going back there two days in a row and is willing to drive me, I'm sold! And that is how I was introduced to Nicky's Fine Baking and Cafe. The dish in question here was the Pao, which I think they call Bao. Or maybe there are two ways to pronounce and spell it, I don't know. When in Hong Kong, my friend told me that I must absolutely taste the Pao/Bao and I took a trek to try it out from what he said was a great place for Pao! I had the veg version there because they ran out of chicken and the other option was pork, which I don't eat, and OH MY GOD, it was awesome. So after my friend placed order for the Pao, my eyes wandered to the counters which had delicious looking food. The one thing that wasn't deli

Sarvi, Hyderabad

Doing business while eating is nothing new. Asking the host to take you to Hyderabad House may not be old. But driving around for 30 minutes and not finding a Hyderabad House in Hyderabad is definitely new. We ended in Sarvi with my host promising me that their food is great, while I've not heard of them before. But any new place and as usual I am game to try. P.S. I have not been to Hyderabad House before and thus the craving. He said he will be happy to place the order on my behalf and I let him. Mutton Biriyani . Chicken Bhadshai (I believe I got the name, or at least the phonetics right). Galouti Kebab. He did not even blink before ordering any of these. He was as confident as ever. We restarted our discussions and waited about 15 minutes for the food to arrive. I was appalled when I saw the biriyani , white in colour. The Galouti was blood red. The Chicken Bhadshai was the only one that looked half way appealing. Reluctantly, with the image of Hyderabad Hous
