Kozhi Idly

Kozhi Idly

Seriously? What a simple idea! Three super soft, super tasty idly with an unassuming chicken gravy with two small pieces of chicken in the gravy and a super super yummy roasted garlic chutney for Rs. 60. While idly sambar may be the standard combination, there are times at home when idly is made with different types of chicken or mutton gravy at home. For Ramzan or Bakrid , as a child, breakfast was the defining moment for our family while the rest of the world was waiting for biriyani  to be despatched from our houses! This tiny, quirky, no-frills place where you have to stand and eat brought back the idly part of those memories and flavours. Let's get it straight - the menu has only 4 lines.   Kozhi idly combo - three pieces of idly with chicken gravy and chutney for Rs. 60, a vegetarian combo for Rs. 30, extra idly at Rs. 10 and parcel charge at Rs. 5. No service charge, service tax, cooking tax, charge for cleaning and sweeping the place, etc! Apparently they have been

Opal Inn

Opal Inn

This place has been around for a really, really long time and though most of us complain that the quality of the food has dropped, occasionally, we still land there for a nice sizzler dinner! Has the quality dropped? Honestly, I don't remember the exact flavours from a decade back, but I won't be wrong to say that it has, at least marginally! So, when guy in the group was adamant that he wanted to have a sizzler, we debated everything else, even Duchess, but someone said that it is quite bad, so we settled for the known devil! One starter, three main courses is all we had! The starter, with a fancy name, Dilwala chicken, was nice and had a nutty tandoori taste to it and this was the first time we had that and quite liked it! I wanted to have the Diamond Grill, but the fellow who was adamant in the first place could not quite make up his mind decided to poach on my order, so I reluctantly gave it to him and settled for a Chicken Breast Sizzler and the third friend

Cafe Adoniya

Cafe Adoniya

Maaria Kulsum is almost a household name in Chennai for cupcakes these days. Her cupcakes are juicy, soft and have the choicest of toppings and slowly she started adding stuff to her menu, but most of us had a big grouse - she was open only till 830 on all days and well.... But Cafe Adoniya has come of age now, with a small exclusive seating independent of the fashion store and is now open till 1030 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The cafe is quite quirky and I love the things she has put up inside! 'A balanced diet is a cookie in each hand', for example and 'We guarantee quick service, no matter how long it takes' and other such fun stuff. But for any eating place, the food is what decides if the place is good or not and Maaria has taken steps to ensure that the quality does not suffer. There is a nice meaty large kaati roll priced at a good Rs. 120 - compare that to the similar price in road side places without a place to sit! Good stuff. I think enough

Kailash Prabat

Kailash Prabat

So a post after one week and it is going to be vegetarian. Yes, I know. Sorry, but I have been meaning to write about it for quite sometime. I love good food, veg or not, but when it comes to chaats, there has been an evolution. During my teenage, I used to love pani puri and bhel puri and such foods, but slowly over the years, I have not been craving too much for them. Maybe because I personally feel that the quality of chaat  has dropped drastically, however mistaken that view might be, because I still feel the old place at Fountain Plaza served great chaat . And chaat  are definitely not great at fine dine places, may be you need that lack of hygiene for it to taste good? I don't know. But when someone craves for chaat  and you don't have a say, Kailash Prabat is probably the only place to land! And that is where we landed too! Service was very very poor that day. I am starting off with the service because I had to ask for water for almost ten minutes and I as

Best Crab dishes in Chennai

Best Crab dishes in Chennai

Given a choice of meat from the sea, my first three choices will be - prawn, prawn and prawn! After that, some types of fish, but crab is not on my favourites list! Rarely do I come across some excellent crab that makes me want more and so, since quite a few have asked me about where 'we' get the best crab, I am pinning down the top 3 crab dishes I have had in Chennai. These are my three favourite crab places, in no particular order! Cosmopolitan Club, Chennai I never thought I will rate club food ever in my blog. Yes the food is good and quite cheap, but the crab lollipop here is one of the best crabs I have ever had. There is almost no added flavour at all, just the taste of crab, shanked and deep fried with bread crumbs. The crumbs are hot, but the crabs are kind of cool! I was not able to get a halfway decent picture, so no visual representation, sorry. If you have friends who are members at this club, do try it out.  At Rs. 85, this is a no-brainer! Crab Cakes at

Recipe Time - Worcestershire Broccoli Chicken

Recipe Time - Worcestershire Broccoli Chicken

I love the Worcest sauce and I love most things made correctly with the Worcest sauce! I stress on correctly, because, for me, there is a very thin line between an overpowering flavour of the sauce and the right amount of flavour. One of the best examples of the right balance for me is the sauce that comes with the chicken minced steak at Jewelbox Restaurant at Blue Diamond! I tried recreating a similar flavour, but served it completely different! This is a reasonably simple recipe and can be served with a host of dishes like rice, flatbreads, steak or by itself with condiments. Like most times I post a recipe, this is quite generic and the aim is to introduce a cooking concept that can be mixed and matched and played with! What you need: 3 teaspoon butter and 3 teaspoon of oil 1 cup of chopped onions 300 ml of chicken stock 5 teaspoons of Worcest Sauce (more or less depending on how strong you want the flavour) A few florets of brocolli 2 pieces of chicken breast, boneles

Breakfast @ Parfait 3

Breakfast @ Parfait 3

I am big sucker for breakfast and I believe that it is a very important meal. A lot of my wellness gyaan  talks about breakfast and its importance, but unfortunately, except for the Stay-includes-breakfast deals  at hotels, somehow fancy-breakfast does not seem to be a very profitable business in Chennai or most parts of India, at least in cities where there is no Au Bon Pain. The Sundays have the brunch, which is a different ball game altogether, but there are lots of places which thrive on breakfast dishes throughout the day - purely on idly, vada, sambar, pongal types , namely Saravana Bhavan and now the newly opened Krishnavilasam, which I am yet to visit. But back to non-Indian breakfast and your choices are quite limited, but when the craving for eating a good breakfast outside of home on a Sunday (and I know I am one of the few who craves for that), the only option that came to mind was Parfait 3. A few months back, I had a very good breakfast at BBQ Chicken, but th

California Pizza Kitchen, Chennai

California Pizza Kitchen, Chennai

If you remember (of course, you don't, so you could read it here ), I had written, some time back, that the flavours at California Pizza Kitchen in Bangalore, left me confused. Being a big bunch of people going to a restaurant helps, because, I was able to taste so many dishes and having the chef next to us and explain it all, has, finally, taken the confusion out! California Pizza Kitchen or CPK, is not just a pizza place - it is positioned as somewhere below a fine dine restaurant and the flavours that left me confused last time was because, I was expecting an American Style Pizza, but there is heavy mid eastern and asian flavours. So, this is not a pizzeria, but a restaurant. Once that confusion is taken care of, your expectations and your experiences will not have too much of a gap. The foccaccia bread with garlic lemon dip was excellent, but if there is one thing that was excellent in both Bangalore and here was the spicy chicken supreme. It is not ve
