Taste of Darkness

Taste of Darkness

"What are you wearing in your eyes, Javid? Is it some infra red device?" I asked. The way Javid navigated through the dark room, serving us water and food was amazing. "I will show you when you finish your meal, Wasim" he said. Right from the time we entered the dark passage holding the shoulders of the person in front, in a single line, Javid led me since I was first in line, deftly and got seven of us seated. He gave us an alphabet figure each and two of us got two. It was pitch dark and I was surprised that my eyed did not adapt at all. Till the end of dinner, I saw nothing. "I have given you all a total of nine alphabets. Please create a word. You've got five minutes before you food comes." With no phones to play Candy crush or Temple run, this wasn't a bad idea to kill time. I had two letters. M and I. "I've got C," yelled my friend and we were soon talking to our neighbours on the opposite side of our table. We got

Chai Nasta

Chai Nasta

During the epic night in Mumbai where a Mumbaikar took this Chennaivasi on a 6 hour food trip, a number of things stood out. One of them was the bun maska. Dipped lovingly in chai and bit with love and chai, this is one dish that makes you believe that you are the most hard working guy in the world and that the bun maska is your only respite. So when bun maska was advertised, Chai Nasta became a must-visit place. So after a hardworking day three hardworking guys, for whom the world keeps wronging and bun maska was the only respite, landed there well into the evening. Yours truly was obviously one of them. Well, it is a pure vegetarian restaurant, something I found out only when I landed there. Else there is a chance that we might have gone elsewhere. Anyway, now that we were there, the two others ordered  elachi  tea, chilly cheese toast and chilly paneer. I asked for the bun maska and the aloo tikki chat. Later on we added one paneer roll to our list. This plac

Avartana, ITC Grand Chola

ITC Grand Chola, was a blessing to Chennai. It brought with it conferences of scales that Chennai has never witnessed before and while hotels around the area were in jitters, they've all benefited from ITC Grand Chola. When ITC Grand Chola runs of out space in their 600 plus-room tiny property, everyone else gets going. It brought audiences from around the country and around the world and introduced them to the essence of the Chola architecture. People who didn't know or care about the history of Tamil Nadu were interested in peeking at its marvel. But there was one blot. While it had great food, all those visitors had to do with Italian and Asian and North West frontier cuisines and despite all of its Chola dynasty architecture, there was no South Indian food. Guests could marvel at everything but if they wanted South Indian food, they had to make do with some a-la-carte at Cafe Mercara or whatever was available in the buffet at Madras

Sunday Brunch, Park Hyatt

Sunday Brunch, Park Hyatt

The best way to dismiss Churros is to call it 'simply fried dough.' Remember though that some of the greatest pleasures in food are simple things done well. Simple things done shabbily are more the norm now. Churros is not native to India, so there is no reason why it should be on menus when the art of destroying the dish is so easy to master. And then it will be called fried dough. Duh! Thankfully, one place, and so far ONLY one place in Chennai has managed to keep the Churros flag flying. At least every time I've had it, it has been done to near perfect. Flying Elephant's Sunday brunch is one where you get caramel, chocolate sauce and a beautiful apple cinnamon kind of dip to dunk you churros in. And slowly revel. Anyways. As you might know, I hate buffets and Sunday brunches are no different. Circa 2008-2012 (yeah, I know, it is not very long ago), brunches cropped up in the city and the torch bearers did a great job. The crowd joined in and

Thick Shake Factory

Thick Shake Factory

Nothing gets the point across like saying exactly what you mean. Thick Shake Factory does that and does that well. No distractions. Just thick shakes. No distractions in the name, the interiors or anywhere. While the menu has sufficient variety, considering that these are just shakes, the possibilities are endless with Shape Your Shake. That is what we got two of. First, a chocolate base, Level 1 mix in was Choco Pie, Level 2 was Hide n Seek (the biscuits) and the topping was Gems. The second drink had a base of Hazelnut, Level 1 was Ferrero, Level 2 was banana and topping was butterscotch nuts. I know I got the gems topping but as I took my first sip, gems came through the straw. That for me was unbelievable. It wasn't just a topping, but had boatloads inside. The chocolate ice cream was the strongest and the choice-pie, the weakest of the flavours. Honestly, I couldn't taste any of the choco-pie. The second drink was similar with the Level 1 mix in. The hazeln
