Best Restaurant Meals of 2016

Best Restaurant Meals of 2016

As another year ends, looking back gives us all memories. Some good ones, some not so good ones. But memories nevertheless. As a foodie, this has been a good year. Or should I say, another good year! Newer experiences, some going-back-to-the-root kind of experiences and some exotic ones. Abyssinian   I’ll start with the most exotic – Ethiopian. Launching for the first time in India, Abyssinian brings the essence, culture and habits of Ethiopian eating to Chennai. With its uncanny resemblance to Indian food, this is not going to be entirely new to our palates. A fun meal with all of us eating out of a single large plate on a dosa (technically an Injera) made of teff flour and loads of dishes on it, the experience was enriching both in terms of flavours and learning about cuisine. One of the gravies, a thick one that had super succulent lamb with mashed channa was like an African spiced non Veg version of the humble hummus, something I am trying to replicate at hom

Christmas Dinner, Focaccia, Hyatt Regency

Christmas Dinner, Focaccia, Hyatt Regency

With so many options for Christmas dinners (read Turkey), it can be tough to pick one (if you have to pick one like me). With my staple Turkey Roast and Biriyani from Blue Diamond is no longer available, search for a replacement turkey was on and with a special menu at Focaccia being up, we presented ourselves there. With the Italian chef off for the day, we were hoping his team can do without him and this is a great way to judge a restaurant - when the chef is off! As I write this, there is only day left and I really think they should have this menu till New Years! One starter, two main courses and a dessert platter was the order for two of us. Starting off with the super yummy Cheese Creme Brûlée! Oh man. Just the sight of creme brûlée in the starter section was enough to get us intrigued, but when the dish arrived, it was yummy. And hot, so watch out. I nearly burnt my tongue, but once past it, this was a beautifully executed dish. The hard sugar top was ba

Roll Over

Roll Over

Cold Stone! A decade or so back, this failed to create ripples in Chennai with chefs taking out ice creams and mixing them with multiple spanks and adding toppings and spanking them again and again, creating this ice cream chutney, very much on the lines of the Kothu Parotta a street side favourite that no Chennaiites would have missed. This simply was the dessert version for the city! But in 2016, the cold stone is making a come back of sorts, but for very different reasons. The ice cream is made in a jiffy from scratch right in front of your eyes. No fancy liquid nitrogen! Just the really really cold stone that instantly freezes the ice cream mix that is then cut and rolled and hence the name. While this is available in the streets of Thailand, I didn't know it originated there! Or at least that is what Roll Over claims.  We had two of their premium ice cream rolls, the Caramel Popcorn and the Guava Chilli. Served on the waffle base with some candied and

English Tea Room

English Tea Room

Another quirky new cafe opens up and this one comes with a little art gallery. Though not fully ready, the cafe part of it is fully set up and its really nice and quirky with a yesteryear European ambiance. The first time I went, I had the high tea and I really did not like it. The sandwich was 3 pieces of the same corn sandwich and I could literally taste the store bough ingredients and sauce,  the scones were ok, the cake was dry and in general was a disaster. The only thing that was good was the 2 tier serving dish! Never thought I would go back in about 2 months time. We landed on a morning plane and were hungry and our options were the English Tea house of Brew Room. And so we decided to give this place another shot simply because the wife loved the name! Yes, just that. And that decision wasn't one that we had to regret, thankfully. We ordered one Full English breakfast and asked to replace the bacon with potatoes which they happily did, and one Shepher
