California Pizza Kitchen

California Pizza Kitchen

CPK as this place is known has had an identity crisis! While somebody wondered, whats there to a name as the rose will smell the same in any other name, it turns out that name is important. CPK is so much more than pizzas and is a full fledged restaurant, not a pizzeria! Their name, though, confuses a lot of people I know! I was there for their new offer, Rs 249 (plus tax of course) for their new range of pizzas. Meeting with fellow foodies is always fun and the dinner started off with my favourite, the green tea cucumber drink which is such an amazing and cooling drink that is real treat during summer! My veggie friend ordered a Thai crunchy salad and we were munching happily waiting for the pizzas. The crunch continued with the Tostada Pizza, which is a hot and cold pizza with lots of crunchy tostadas on top. I didn't like the flavours too much, but my foodies friends dug into it like there was no tomorrow! I forgot the name of the chicken pizza, but it was quite

Citibank Restaurant Week, Hip Asia!

Citibank Restaurant Week, Hip Asia!

Yay!!! Citibank's Restaurant Week, that has been doing the rounds for the past few years in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, finally lands in Chennai! I guess, it required Chennai making it to four international publications as the Best City to live in, Best city in the world, Best city in the universe etc etc, before Citibank saw it. We Chennaites, of course knew it, long back. Its okay. The world has found out only now! So, jokes apart, Restaurant Week is a fabulous concept that happens around the world. It happened in Boston, when I was in MIT, it happens in.......long story short, it happens around the world. Every place has its own unique way to operate, but in India, its about getting fancy restaurants to give you sit down chef meals at a much lower price. I've not been a part of it in India, but some friends have been to Caperberry in Bangalore during this week and have raved about it. The list in Chennai was impressive. Benjarong and Teppan were there

Fusilli Reasons

Fusilli Reasons

Comfort Pasta? Is that possible for a Tamilian? I didn't think so, but after Friday night, I've found a new comfort food. Seriously, how can you find a new comfort food? Isn't that something that grows on you over time? That is what I thought too, but after a quick dinner at Fusilli reasons, perception has changed. So, I've been hearing a few good things about Fusilli Reasons and when my cousin wanted to catchup, I suggested that place. Took me a few rounds before I found it and was shocked to see the size of the place. Almost a hole in the wall place that can seat about 10 people if cramped, wasn't exactly what I was expecting. Because of the all the good reviews, we decided to stay back and eat. And that was the best decision of last week! The menu is written on the wall and let me list it out - 3 types of garlic bread, 4 types of pasta, nachos, and two drinks. That's it. The garlic breads are 30 bucks for three pieces, the pasta and the nachos

Double Roti

Double Roti

Not even in my wildest dreams would I have attributed Double Roti to mean the two breads between which the burger patty is stuck. Or the two breads between which fillings are stuffed and made into sandwiches. I might have thought of Double Roti as a Punjabi restaurant. Or a North Indian restaurant!!! Until a friend told me they served the best burgers in town, I wouldn't have cared about a restaurant enough to want to land there within the next few minutes. My foodie friends warned me not to leave them and go. But none of them were available on short notice for a place that claims to serve awesome burgers. I mean, common. What can possibly be more important in life? So, I ditched them!!!! I know after reading this they will be ready with some bats to beat me up, but I am willing to take that. And they don't know what they are missing. The first thing (ok, after getting seated) I noticed is the efficient use of space. While tables were pretty close to each othe

Ciclo Cafe

Ciclo Cafe

There aren't too many theme based restaurants in Chennai, are there? I definitely don't recall anything based on cycles. While once a common mode of transport, the cycle has now made a come back like how most things do - with a premium. Ciclo cafe has an eye catching appearance and it caught our eye when we were driving down and from then on, has been on my to-do list. When my friend and me finally went there after it seemed like the whole world has been there, we realised that this was by L'amandier and our excitement died down a bit. Not because L'amandier is bad by any means, I love the place, but going by the exteriors, I really was hoping somebody new has tried their hands. The highlight of the place is, no surprises here, the bicycle store! With cycles costing 3-4 Tata Nanos per piece, the store is exciting. The menu is very similar to L'amandier with the addition of pizzas. We settled for a broccoli pie, chicken sandwich and a chocolate dessert

On The Rocks, Park Sheraton

On The Rocks, Park Sheraton

Concepts come and concepts go, but for something as unique as cooking meat on your table over a hot stone, to survive almost 5 years, is no mean feat!!!! My second visit to On The Rocks was just as fabulous as the first one! Now, don't let the gimmicks fool you. This place has a super cool lounge in the ground floor where people 'chill' before hitting the restaurant on the first floor to cook for themselves. Being a Friday night, the lounge was packed till about 9 pm after which the guests went up!!!! Nice and conceptually it gives you the pub hop feel within the same restaurant. Now, the tricks. There is a Lava Stone, heated to 400 degrees and placed right in front of you with an equally big caution placard. Place your finger on the rock and it will be cooked to medium in a minute and well done in 3!!!! So beware. For the faint hearted, there is a kitchen which will do the cooking and serve the food to your table, but this experience is worth it. S
