Hey, nice car. Thanks. I like it too. So where is the treat. Anywhere you want. Awesome. 10 mins later. Dude, our friend has got his car. Lets take him for a treat. Both buddies, the one with the new car and one with an old car walked in. Yup, I've booked a table for three at Flying Elephant. Wow, you're treating us at Flying Elephant? What? When did I say I am treating you guys at Flying Elephant. You didn't. But I've also booked a movie for the three of us at 10 PM. So we should be good to go after dinner. I didn't say I am treating you there. Who said you told us you were treating us there? Then why do you think I am treating you there. Remember two years back when I bought my car. How you guys wrung a treat out of me? I don't remember. Good, two years later, I won't remember today either. But I am vegetarian today. Last time I checked, they have veg dishes at Fly

Cuckoo Club Diner

Cuckoo Club Diner

"When it comes to plating versus taste, taste wins hands down." I vividly remember the first Masterchef Australia season in which towards the end, the judges told the eliminated contestant those words. While plating is important to add a visual element, it should be to enhance an already good tasting dish and cannot make an average dish better! After seeing photos from diners, this place was on my to-eat list! Like I had to do it right now, types. The place is relatively young and going by an article in The Hindu, it is started by a passionate foodie who has returned from California. First visit was with a bunch of friends. We started off with a reasonably bad garlic butter pretzel. Except the shape, nothing else was pretzel like. The consistency was wrong, but oh well. And then came a dish that was outstanding! A crumb fried zucchini. I don't know what went into the crumb, but that was a kicker of a dish! We polished it off effortlessly! And then the

An evening at the Marina Beach

An evening at the Marina Beach

There are times I miss Cha Bar. The amazingly wonderful quaint little bookshop that had a wonderful cafe and allows you to keep reading to your heart's content. This time around, I had a book in hand. But didn't have a place to read. Car? No. Office, definitely not on a Sunday. Amethyst? Thought about it and almost decided to go there when a friend suggested the Marina Beach. In the recent years, I've not used Marina beach as much as a good Chennaite should. I don't go there running anymore, I don't go there in the evenings and honestly, I guess, I've forgotten Marina. What else can explain me wondering where to go to spend some alone time reading a book and Marina had to be prompted for me to even consider it? Shame on me! Shame on calling myself a Chennaite! So I landed. Sunday evening is like a open house with individual family parties. Was very lucky to find a place to park my car. And the food scene was inviting. Marina used to be t

Daawat-a-Biriyani

Daawat-a-Biriyani

When my colleague walked into my room with a full box of sweets, I was surprised. "Why is the box full?" "Employees are striking." "What?" "Yeah." A junior walked in. "Why nobody took sweets?" "We don't want sweets sir. We want only Biriyani." "Oh." "Yes, sir," he said, smiled and left my room. "Dude, we need to serve biriyani,"my colleague said. "We served it for our company day, a few months back." "But apparently both of us did not serve it for many Ramzans and Bakrids and for a lot of our personal stuffs. We better serve it quickly or else it is going to be trouble." "I don't really celebrate Bakrid. Even I didn't have biriyani." "Do you think they care about that?" The junior walked in. "Dey. Shall we get biriyani Bismi?" "That we can go there and eat, sir. We want something that is ho

When someplace is new it town, it gets me excited. When someplace is new in town that has a different cuisine that is not in town, I get super excited. When someplace is new in town claiming that it cooks chicken in a first-time-in-the-world method, then, well, that has not happened in Chennai town, so I didn't know how to react to it. Actually, I did know. I had to visit it asap! And then I got an opinion from a friend. And to contest that opinion, I went again, this time with two other foodies. My opinion didn't change, their opinions were the same as mine and the friends opinion was his. So they infuse the chicken. Period. What's so special? Problem is that the what you get on your plate is entirely your fault. OK, bad choice of words. What you get on the plate is entirely your choice. OK, not good enough. What you get on the plate is what you were destined to get. Hmmmm...nope. OK, there are so many ways to get the chicken that the choice may be good,

Rewind 5 years. Frankfurt, Germany. Me: Dey, take me and introduce me to some nice German cuisine. My Tamil friend settled in Germany: German cuisine aaa? Vega vacha panni between bun and a glass of beer. That's all. (For the uninitiated, the literal translation would be, 'Steam pig between a bun ......' A few days later, we were eating some awesome beef with grilled onions and I question his interpretation of German cuisine. 'Oh, you get these during the fairs only. Yeah, its great!' Another couple of days later, we were having schnitzel in a German pub with apple beer for him and non alcoholic apple beer for me. I questioned him again. 'Oh, this is actually Austrian, not really German,' he dismissed. Slowly, I figured out some very nice stuff you get in Germany. Yeah, its not Italy or France of Mid east, but it certainly has more to it than steamed pig in a bun!!!! But Oktoberfest is mostly that, with German ladies carrying
