Pizza Republic, Perambur - Delivery

Pizza Republic, Perambur - Delivery

For us poor folks in North Chennai, eating out 'nearby' has never been an option (and pretty sure, it won't be in the near future)! So imagine my happiness when I spotted Pizza Republic in Perambur with the delivery option to my house, a further 4 km away!!!! Last Sunday, we deviated from our usual monthly Dominos dose and ordered from PR - one custom made thin crust pizza with chicken, brocolli, mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes and the usual onions and tomatoes, a burrito, a taco, one portion garlic bread and some potato wedged. Delivery happened in about 45 minutes and the first reaction from home was 'Eeaww'! Is that a pizza? It looks sad!!! Taco? PR has a long way to go in packing the non pizza stuff and a very long way to go in making the thin crust pizza look appealing. The way it was packed, the taco was over each other and almost mashed together, while the burrito managed to land in one piece! The garlic bread was dry by the time it was delivered

Berry'd Alive

Berry'd Alive

We have been having conversations about the market for desserts in Chennai - a pure dessert place. And invariably the outlook is negative. Examples of places like Dessert Studio and Dessert Safari are thrown in and suggestions that they are not doing too well. I disagree. Dessert Safari is an excellent place, but confused. I had blogged about it and wondered why there was a fine dine table set up for a dessert place - maybe we don't have the market for a fine dine dessert place that also served french fries and short eats. And Dessert Studio is bad, common, you cannot assess Chennai's dessert market with these places - one excellent, but bad location and confused branding and the other, a bad one in an excellent location. How many places are there in Chennai which can talk of desserts beyond anything that has chocolate in it? Either it is cup cakes or donuts or chocolate shakes! My last visit to Bangalore introduced me to an excellent dessert place called Berry'd A

CHOP @ SANDY / GYFT LOVE

CHOP @ SANDY / GYFT LOVE

"Wishing you a very happy birthday. Check you email, Wasim," said the birthday wish on Facebook. And simultaneously my email had a similar birthday wish and a gyft! Yeah, gyft! I was gifted a 5 course meal for two at CHOP by Sandy! Gift experiences, not stuff says the tagline. So, I opened up the website to look at what all restaurants they have tied up with and was surprised to find that eating out is the least of their focus. I mean, there was a 'Personalised cooking experience with a Le Cordon Bleu trained chef for Rs 2500, a spice trail hunt for Rs 1500, a Bazaar trail at Mylapore and stuff like that. Lots to do with food but not all were restaurant oriented and that is a nice thing! By the time I noticed the gift, we had made other plans for my birthday, so we scheduled this dinner for a another day and all of it was handled by GYFTLOVE . Back to the food at CHOP that I was gifted - a 5 course meal. We were served a minestrone soup with garlic bread

Baked Delights - A Home Baker

Baked Delights - A Home Baker

Thanks to the 'other' folder on Facebook, I almost missed out on this wonderful home baker! As I was randomly checking my messages on this stupid 'other folder', I found a message from her telling me that she would like to send me some of her chicken tarts and baked chicken. I responded (after 2 months) and promptly, a day before my birthday, a pack arrived from Baked Delights! 1/2 kg of baked chicken, 12 chicken tarts and 3 slices of garlic bread were in the pack. The garlic bread was dry, stuck to each other and bad, so let's get that out of the way. The other two - were lip smacking. My colleague and I secretly finished the entire chicken bake and refused to call our other colleagues. Without his knowledge, I had hid 6 tarts to take home and thats how the tarts survived to reach home! At home, it was a super hit. All 6 tarts (small ones) disappeared in no time and I was asked to place an order the next day. This time, the tarts were not available and s

Tuscana Pizzeria

Tuscana Pizzeria

Wah, is there a better place for Italian in Chennai? Tuscana has become one of  our go-to place for everything from comfort eating to celebrating! The consistency with which they dole out dishes is amazing and I think I am yet to have a bad experience there. There was a time when their credit card machine failed and I had no cash and they simply told me to pay next time!!! With Tuscana, we have a standard order - a minestrone soup to share, one garlic bread stick, a ruspante pizza and tiramisu! Add the 15% discount that American Express gives you and this is a place for a meal! But this time around, we decided to skip the usual and try out older stuff! Yes, some things which I have enjoyed in Tuscana, but because of the comfort of the regular order, we forgot about them! So we asked for a Hay and Straw pasta - a superb pasta that was featured in my video of Tuscana! Not available! :-( "Ok, so Chicken Parma, then," I said. Not available! "At least the white

Kerala Part II - Waterscapes, Kumarakom

Kerala Part II - Waterscapes, Kumarakom

Entry to the Resort So after the one night stand in a boat house at Allepy, we took a cab to Kumarakom. Normally, you could ask your boat to drop you off at Kumarakom, but due to the weather, we had to take the 45 minute cab ride to Waterscapes, our resort. Now, there are some wonderful properties at Kumarakom, but none can parallel the Waterscapes resort, because it captures the essence of Kumarakom beautifully. It is not a fancy cement resort, but a rustic, beautiful and luxurious one! Rooms are built over small backwater canals and most rooms have a couple of hammocks below them as the rooms are all on stilts. Its green green and green all over, sorry, green, brown and blue all around. I am going to let the pictures do the talking for a bit! There is nothing to do in Kumarakom, really. And therefore a trip to Kumarakom must be to unwind and not to have hectic day trips. A book, some music or just lazing around the pool with food and Ayurvedic Spa

Holiday in Kerala, Part 1 - Houseboat at Allepy

Holiday in Kerala, Part 1 - Houseboat at Allepy

There are so many places to visit in Kerala, but the very thought of Kerala only brings back pictures of backwaters to my mind. Yes, there is Munnar and similar places, but you have those type of places elsewhere - for me, Kerala is quintessentially, backwaters! So, for the second time, I did the same routine and did not regret any of it - Allepy and Kumarakom. The trip started with the overnight journey on the Allepy Express - left Chennai at 915 PM and was scheduled to reach Allepy at 930 AM. From the words of the houseboat owner -"Saar, dat drain olways late by adleast won over", and so I was prepared for the delay. Took a ride from the station to what they call the 'Starting Point' and was escorted via a small lane into the backwaters where our houseboat was waiting for us. We paid the house boat owner, were introduced to the cook, the boat 'captain' and his assistant and we entered the two bedroom houseboat, all for ourselves. T
