Sandy's

Sandy's

Every time I think of Sandy's I think if chocolates and cakes and fondue and those have been my favorites there for quite sometime. But after being told that there is no fondue and that they now serve real foods, I found the opportunity to get there with a couple of friends for a snack. After settling down, I ordered my favorite concoction, a cookie one, which I always order and my two friends, against my advice ordered fruit juices. The concoction was brilliant, just brilliant portion and taste wise, but the fruit juices were served in fancy beakers and were over in one small gulp. At 150 bucks a piece, there should have been more juice, but for the same price, the cookie concoction was worth every penny. We then got our finger foods, a panko chicken, falafels and cheese dumps. The chicken was very nice and well done, while the falafels and the cheese stuff were nice too. At an average price of about Rs. 150 each, they were good finger foods. I certainly miss their fondue and that

I have been wanting to eat here for quite sometime, but it just never happened. Last Saturday, when I met a friend and we had nothing better to do, we decided to try it out. And we came back feeling ashamed of not having eaten here for the past so many years. And I wish I had eaten sushi here before trying it out anywhere else and that way, I would not have had that mind block when I was in some wonderful restaurants abroad that also reeve sushi. After looking around the dingy complex for the restaurant, we found it and settled into the small, home dining room kind of place with not much of an ambiance. The lady who seemed in charge and was the only one serving, showed us our seats, gave us one menu for the two of us and left. The menu is extensive and each dish has a picture of itself on the menu so it made it very easy for us to order. Before we could say anything, we were given a bowl of fried stuff, complimentary and we later found out that they were fried squids. We ordered a port

Cafe Matteo, Bangalore

Cafe Matteo, Bangalore

While I admitted that bangalore has better places to eat, everyone agreed, but now it's true to coffee shops as well. Bangalore even has better coffee shops than Chennai, sadly. While I was walking down Brigade road, I saw this cool looking coffee shop just off the road, on Church Street and I pulled the friends to get in there. I asked for a white chocolate mocha, while a friend a black chocolate mocha and another had iced tea. We got ourselves some French fries and a cinnamon Danish for company. The mochas were brilliant and the food was very comforting, but the ambiance was brilliant. With a nice road side seating area for the those who need thermal energy and a cool comfortable sofas inside, it reminds me of a French cafe in Paris. Since I was only carrying my Nokia camera, photos cannot do justice, so, not photos of the place. And the wait for such cafes in Chennai continues....... Food 8/10 Ambiance 9/10 Service 8/10 Price 8/10 It's on Church street, just off Brigade road

Dynasty, Harrisons's

Dynasty, Harrisons's

One of my friend, a gentleman, one of the few or rather the only one who gave a birthday treat on the same day, promptly, took us to Dynasty for dinner. And by the time he came fashionably late, the three of us who were already there, helped ourselves to some nice starters- a dragon chicken, some onion rings and some spring rolls. Ok, yeah, the restaurant was nice, elegant, blah blah........ And then two more people arrived and our host was yet to come. So we promptly ordered some Chinese chop seuy, a mixed fried rice and some chilly chicken to go with it, while my vegetarian friend ordered something for herself and ate it all by herself too. We also got ourselves some soup and some more of the starters. The dragon chicken was a little different here, but tasty nevertheless. Honestly, if you are in a big group, it makes more sense to get a lot of starters and taste all of them rather than ordering a mountain of fried rice or noodles and finding it tough to finish or finishing it with e

Dine, Escape at Express Avenue

Dine, Escape at Express Avenue

Express avenue is a nice place to shop, but I find myself very disappointed with the food scene. Very often I am have to stand in multiple queues one for the not so smart card, and in different places and by the time we gather all our food, tiredness takes over the enjoyment of the meal. After dining once at Dine, the food court is now almost out of my radar. From the classy ambiance to the friendly service, Dine, for me is a real restaurant, not withstanding the fact that it is inside a cinema. The last time we went, i got myself a chicken burger, while others got themselves a grilled fish in lemon butter sauce, a chettinad chicken gravy meal that is served with a choice of rice and mandarin chicken meal with noodles. I love the burger here, while it is not the best and it is not beef, it is a very good chicken burger and the fries that come with it are nice, not so oily and crisp. The chicken gravy meals are nice at at around Rs. 225, they are a bang for the buck in a nice setting. T

At.mosphere, Burj Khalifa, Dubai

Being a foodie, I had to visit this restaurant when in Dubai. It is the world's highest restaurant in the worlds tallest building and all that hype surrounding it. After struggling to get through security because we did not have print out of our reservation, we finally got through to the Armani Hotel and my god, it was beautiful. Once inside you are treated like a king and the place does feel like a modern palace. We were lead to the elevator that goes super fast from 1 to 123, with some ear popping and then you have to walk down one floor to the restaurant. After exchanging pleasantries, we are given a window seat and the view, needless to say, is yet to be matched anywhere else, and unless they build a taller tower with such a wonderful base and the city has other high rises, I am not sure there will ever be such a view from any restaurant. We got ourselves a drink each, a vanilla iced tea and a raspberry mocktail, and a snack each, an atmosphere fried c

Cafe Chokolade

Cafe Chokolade

So, last tuesday, we skipped lunch, yeah bad habit, due to work and when we were starving by late evening, the two of us decided to try out this place after reading about it on Facebook. After struggling to park our cars, we finally got in and settled down to by well utilized and well done interiors. Nice and cosy place for some coffee. The tree that grows through the roof is a nice thing that makes you feel like you are sitting in a place that does something for the planet and all that stuff. We ordered a chocolate cheese sandwich to share and an Oreo Chokolade for me, while the friend ordered a walnut shake for himself. The sandwich turned out to be nirvana, yeah, imagine chocolate oozing out of a sandwich that has cheese on top. The Oreo turned out to be super too, but the walnut shake tasted more like mint chocolate shake and was pretty ordinary. Nothing much to talk about service, but I would have liked them to advice us on what they are good at, before we placed our order rather

Omelette Shop, Egmore

Omelette Shop, Egmore

Almost everyone in Chennai knows this place and if not, everyone should. Where else will you get sandwiches for this price and this taste? Located right outside Alsa Mall, Egmore, this guy probably makes more money than the whole of Alsa mall put together. Just wonderful bread omelettes, vegetable sandwiches and chicken sandwiches. All priced under Rs. 20 and he even has a menu. Everything can be customized as to how much chutney you want, how spicy you want it and how much you want it grilled. The cucumber 'time pass' till you get your sandwich is a really a time pass, but you get it only if you are in a car with a couple of people. My favorites are the chilly cheese toast and bread omelettes while the friend loves the simple veg sandwich, not grilled but with the soft bread, bliss. And you can have a full meal for under Rs. 50 a person with a small 7 up to wash it down. So this weekend, try the roadside sandwich instead of the fancy restaurants if possible. And don
