Iftar, An Introduction

Iftar, An Introduction

So here we are in the holy month of Ramzan. While for Muslims, its a sacred period with a lot of piousness coming in and the day long fasting is decreed for them, the rest of the world is taken in by the amazing range of food that is there to be eaten. For a very long time, in major parts of Tamil nadu, the fast breaker has always been the 'nombu kanji' with dates. The kanji is really a porridge with lentils, rice, meat in some households, garlic and tomato, give or take a few ingriedients depending on the flavors of the household. It is nutritious, is light on the stomach which kind of contracts due to the day long fasting and gives the energy rush that the body craves. Dates has been used as a tradition to add to the fast breakers which usually have a number of snacks to them. At home, it has mostly been chicken cutlets, snack called 'pettis', which is like a samosa, but crescent in shape and has just potato pieces (not mashed) and minced meat inside. Depending on th

Paprika at Courtyard Marriott, Chennai Foodie Showcase

An IAKR Films and Chennai Foodie initiative. Well, here we go again! I know its the month of Ramzan, but for all those who don't have to fast all day, and are looking for something to do this weekend, I thought I will just throw in the video! So this is the second in the Chennai Foodie Showcase series, where we try to show my favorite places to eat at, in all their glory. In today's episode, Chef Girish, the executive chef of Courtyard Marriot takes us around his Sunday Brunch, which has become easily one of the best brunches in the Chennai today with what can only be called a massive spread! What was not shot in the video is their exclusive child play area, because it was so crowded that we could not shoot it properly. In fact, the kids have their own little buffet counter right next their play area with all kiddie stuff! So I hope you enjoy this video and as always, keep the comments coming! California Pizza Kitchen

California Pizza Kitchen

So the last time I was in Bangalore, folks were shopping and by the time they were done, we realized that it was way past lunch time. With most places being shut, we stumbled onto California Pizza Kitchen on the 100 feet road of Indra Nagar and ventured in. A nice upmarket place with neatly done interior, we settled ourselves in a corner and looked at the rather elaborate menu. Being hungry as we were, we quickly asked for thin crust BBQ chicken pizza, a mezze platter and corn cakes, as I really wanted to see if the corn cakes were any good, they used to be something I really liked in the US. But we were treated to flavors that was totally new to all our tongues. The pizza was very very different, the thin crust was very thin and chewy and the cheese was really different and maybe if it was not called pizza, I might have really liked it, but I cannot say that I did not. Everyone shared the same opinion and it was even worse for the mezze platter. The humus was predictable, but the pita

Royal Thai Food Festival, Benjarong

The promotions of the Royal Thai Festival are all over the place and for someone who loves Thai food, I was rueing missing the showcase a day before the festival began, but Benjarong called me over to have a chat with their celebrity chef and resident chefs last night for dinner and so here is how it went. I was greeted by Chef Ram, the brand chef at Benjarong and was shown to the table where a friend joined me sometime later. Before he came, I was aquatinted to their celebrity chef, Ms Tharee Charupas and we got chatting. 'So are you a writer?' she asked 'Not really, but aspiring to be. I am a physician by profession but with lots of passion for food and so I got into an area of medicine which plays around a lot with food' I said ' I was a nurse before the passion for food brought me into this profession. Looks like healthcare and food are very closely related' she said. 'Oh yes, so madam, do you have a restaurant in Thailand?' I asked

Simar, Punjabi Cuisine

Simar, Punjabi Cuisine

At the pace in which restaurants are opening up at KNK road, what is already a food hub will start to become an overdose. At the new complex that came up a few months back and has a few not so great restaurants, the empty ground floor is now occupied by Simar, the punjabi cuisine restaurant thankfully, the only one in KNK road. So being invited to check out the new restaurant, a bunch of us from CFG landed there. We had the chance to meet the owner and realized that the place is named after her. Greeted by exquisite interiors that involve charcoal paintings on the walls and very elegant interiors, we learn that she designed them and as is turns out, the menu too. We were served some mango lassi that had more banana in it than either mango or lassi. And then came out the dishes, a chicken kalvi kebab, simply outstanding on that day. It's a nice boneless piece of chicken stuffed with some garlic and something else and grilled and it was a perfect blend of spices marinade that made it

Fusion 9

Fusion 9

Whenever I think of a good restaurant, fusion 9 always skips my mind, but every time someones mentions it, I keep thinking of it as a very good restaurant that could have been great, but something is missing every time I eat there and that is why it skips my mind. So the launch of a new menu and a chance to catch up with the bloggers was enough reason to land myself there on a very busy work evening. It did not start off great, and this is not the first time they are messing up my drink. I was offered an apple drink and what I got was appy fizz with slices of apple, sugar and few more condiments all of which made it a bad drink. The last time I was there, they messed up a simple iced tea! I mean, common. Then the first starter came along and man, what a wonderful thought. Watermelon with cheese, I guess, fusion 9 takes the name quite seriously and they try it with the drinks with bad results, but with the food, it was perfect. I have never had watermelon with cheese and have never tho
