Thalapakatti

Thalapakatti

It's been a week since I updated the blog due to me not eating out as often due to various silly reasons. Thalapakatti has been around for quite sometime now and somehow I have never been there. Last Saturday, two of my friends had a strong urge to eat there and having never been there and a new place to write about was enough reason for me to join them. So rather than ordering Chinese and complaining about it, we stuck to their specialities. For starters, we asked for a pepper chicken fry, a karandi omelette, kolu urundai and fried fish for starters. Tiny cannot define the quantity. My friend even joked that the length of the plate was only as long as his index finger and asked me to shoot a picture as proof too. But the food was decent I must say. The karandi omelette was tiny, but quite nice. The kolu urundai (i think it was kollu urundai or some urundai, but there was only one urundai on the menu) plate had only three pieces and was decent again, while the chicke

Burgundy

Burgundy

The day finally arrived. I got a message from Ali, the ubiquitous chief of CFG, informing the invite from Vipin to check out Burgandy. With a few friends already having tried the place and giving me the feeling that I was missing something in life by not having been there yet, I was really looking forward to the lunch. By the time I landed, everyone else was settled in with Vipin (for those who don't know what I am talking about, he is the owner of Burgandy and Tuscana and Kryptos and the Subways in Chennai), at the center and being his usual entertaining self. Looked like I was not the only one who was dying to get here. The ambiance is beautiful to say the least, but I was dying to get to the food. Starters came and we had some great kebabs. The chicken kebab was juicy and tasty, the paneer was outstanding and the other starter for the day was also great. Starters are served on the table along with the pizzas, so you can warm up before walking to the buffet. Talking

5 Senses

5 Senses

People have been talking about five senses for a while now and I have been wanting to see what the big deal was. When I had to meet an old friend and a new one, we decided to check out five senses. The ambiance is just brilliant. It reminded me of a hotel in Barcelona, except that resto was sea facing. The outdoor seating area was very eclectic and extremely well done. It also doubles up as their performance area at night I was told by the waiter. The menu is very interesting and it talks about traveling and has the dishes by the side. Generally well done with the interiors and gimmicks. We ordered a cold mezze platter and a pizza for starters. The hummus was pretty nice, but certainly not the best in town. The baba ganoush was actually very nice and the hung curd made up the trio. However I loved their pita bread, really soft with the pocket and baked to perfection. The chicken pizza with paprika and feta was quite awesome, it looked like wood fire baked pizza but apparently it is

Blitz Cafe

Blitz Cafe

We noticed a rather new place near Valluvar Kottam which had the three names and all names sounded like restaurants. We ventured inside and was told that one is a multicuisine restaurant, another is a coffee shop and the third yet to opened will be a barbecue joint. We stepped into the coffee shop on the first floor called Blitz Cafe to some very funky interiors. Then my friend said that there are two other Blitz cafes and he heard that they were good. So we just decided to try the place. We ordered just two from the menu, one honey mustn't grilled chicken sandwich and one Blitz chocolate dessert. The sandwich priced at Rs. 140 was small for its price, but very tasty. It was served with fries and a coleslaw and was a nice deal. The chocolate cake with ice cream was tasty, but nothing out standing. The service was quick, but quality wise they are still finding their foot I suppose. The restaurant below seems to have been built for the hookah crowd, but after the ban, I wo

Desserts at Hyatt Lobby

Desserts at Hyatt Lobby

So, the dessert pang hit us again at 1230 am and we decided to hit Hyatt this time and see how the coffee shop there is. Having not had lunch and dinner we were looking forward to our dessert. After not being impressed by the dessert spread in Spice at Rs. 750 per head, we headed to the lobby coffee shop and settled down to some superb seating. I was startled to see "sacher torte" on the menu. I asked the waiter if this is the original sacher torte and he said it was. I told him that the sacher torte is a trademark used by the sacher hotel and the torte is quite something. He said the chef makes a great sacher torte and it could be better than the original. So I decided to have that, while the wife asked for a cheese cake with blueberry sauce. What was served to me was not sacher torte, period, maybe if it was not called the sacher torte, I might have liked it slightly more, but I was not in the mood for a hard cake and really wanted something soft and it was not what it is s

Sparky's Friday Buffet

Sparky's Friday Buffet

Sparky's is among the few multi cuisine places in Chennai which does not serve north indian, south indian, Chinese and the likes, but serves multi cuisine from another part of the world. A place where every cuisine is Americanized. A place where some of my friends from abroad are at home eating Americanized pizzas and the likes. The friday night buffet here is quite something. There are soooooo many options and invariably five dishes are great and at Rs. 350, it is a steal So last friday night, a cousin of mine who can out eat man vs food and put an elephant to shame and me decided to put out our burger fire which has been burning for a while now. We reserved a table as Friday can get super crowded with waiting times exceeding thirty minutes. We started off with the burgers, you actually have to make your own burger here and I got a nice fresh bread, stuffed it with a nice beef patty, some coleslaw, a piece or two of lettuce and mayo inside the poor bun and the result is
