Wild Amazon

Wild Amazon

The new theme restaurant by the Mouthful Group is open to public! The setting of the restaurant is simply superb, with an elegant waiting area in the ground floor and some superb interiors to mimic the rain forest setting (reminds you of the Rain Forest restaurant in Adyar, very similar settings). There are speakers all over which keep throwing out sounds through your meal which is more of a distraction than being an attraction. There are sounds of elephants and a waiter walks around in a tiger costume and I am not too sure if both the elephant and the tiger are found in the Amazon Forest, I thought it was more of an Anaconda place!!! We ordered one Raan (whole Lamb Leg) cooked in Moroccan style, one Afghani chicken, one baby corn fry, one crispy corn and some desserts! The Afghani chicken was probably the best dish of the lot, it was soft, well marinated and well cooked with some superb flavor! The Raan was not as good as the one in Flame Grill (by the same group), this one, though

Sea Shell

Sea Shell

Its time for a rendezvous with Sea Shell and so my friend and I decided to get there for a quick lunch. Sea shell tries to be multi cuisine, but is only good with what they do best - Grilled stuff!! The place is quite small on the crowded Mount Road end of Greme's road with parking being a huge headache. Once you do get inside the hot place, the smell of grilled chicken fills the air! We stuck to our favorites - the Arabian Grilled Chicken and The Afghani Chicken. Half portion gives you two large chunks (half a chicken), some hummus, some mayo, some salad and two Kuboos! The kuboos here are nice and soft on most days, the hummus is almost always great and the chicken, really tasty. The grilled chicken was brilliant today, cooked to perfection and served in style. I also loved the Afghani chicken, though my friend did not like it (so i got to eat lots of it)! Another favorite of mine here is their BBQ Grill Chicken, which tastes more Tandoori than BBQ, but in a place like this, n

Elementz Cafe

Elementz Cafe

On a relatively slow day at work, we decided to walk down to Elementz for a quick lunch. I was stuck with three vegetarians and so we only tried the veg dishes this time around. You can get some info on the two non veg dishes I had the last time around at Elementz here ! We ordered three iced lemon teas and one cranberry shake, one cottage cheese pizza, one pasta with white sauce and one with red sauce. The iced teas were alright, while the shake was nice, smooth and tasty. The pizza was of a different crust, neither thin crust nor the heavy base, but unique and extremely well made and the sauce reminded me of the olden day Hot Breads Pizza with a heavy tomato pizza sauce!  Both the pastas were nice and the sauces had the right amount of flavor in them. While my friend was guzzling down his shake, we found a pepsi cap inside it. We had a good laugh and brought it to the notice of the waiter who promptly took it back, apologized and replaced it with a full drink. An apology and we f

50 Bucks

50 Bucks

Ok, just because a Nano costs only Rs 1 lac, it does not mean that it can be delivered without a steering wheel, or an engine. It also means that the car needs to necessarily run and you should not be required to push it everytime. Now that we understand that value for money needs to have SOME value, let me review whatever is left of 50 bucks! We decided to try some new place for dinner last night and finally chose to dine at 50 bucks. We were nine of us and we started out with squid fry, french fries and onion rings. The squids were old, bad and nasty, the french fries were undercooked and tasteless, while the onion rings were alright. We then asked for some fried chicken which was again undercooked and tasteless! We sent back the french fries and it promptly came out all heated in a microwave and still undercooked! The drinks were not bad, but the rest of it was pathetic. We asked for the bill, paid and left! The ambiance is not bad for a place priced like this and the service

the Pasta bar Veneto

the Pasta bar Veneto

Having seen a few good pictures on their facebook page, and having heard a few good reviews, we head to the newest Italian outlet in town, the Pasta bar Veneto. A nice chap with a broad smile welcomes us and seats us in a very nicely done restaurant. The interiors are simple, but elegant with a wood finish theme to it- a personal favorite. The menu is exquisitely designed, with lots of pictures, trivia and the likes on the left pages and the food stuff on the right. Being only two of us, we ordered some kiwi mohito to drink and one grilled chicken, one baked dish, the name of which I forgot and a mango cheese cake! The mohitos was served in a nice big glass and tasted good, not the best in town though. The grilled chicken was nice, tasted good, served with garlic bread, mashed potatoes and vegetables and was a good meal. The chicken, I felt, was not soft enough for my liking, but no complaints on the taste. The baked vegetables with chicken were decent, but a little on the dry side

Dosa Calling aka DC

Dosa Calling aka DC

When I saw the empty store at DC's original outlet in Kilpauk, I thought this was another venture gone wrong, but they have resurfaced and how!!!! Dosa Calling has now set shop off R.K Salai in a nice large space in a great area! The interiors are way better than the original store and they have two very nice quotes on the wall - 'If you waste your time cooking, you will miss the next meal' and I do not remember the second one! The place can easily accommodate more than fifty people and for a breakfast joint, this is quite good. The right side of the menu was brilliant - Paper Roast priced at Rs 30, Plain Dosa at Rs 25 and a mini breakfast at Rs 55!!!! Way better than the Bhavans! We ordered a mini breakfast, a paper roast and a plate of vadas! The mini breakfast came with 6 pieces of mini idly, a mini (not very mini, a decent size) dosa, a cup of pongal, a vada, four chutneys and a mini coffee/tea. Perfect breakfast at the perfect prize! The paper roast was every bit

Le Chocolate pâtisserie

Le Chocolate pâtisserie

A brand new cake shop has opened its doors at Egmore and we went out to try some of their offerings. Though it has a nice name, as you enter, you cannot help but think that this is just another cake shop! The seating is nice and generous and being new the interiors were sparkling clean. There is a first floor seating too, but we stuck to the base floor next to the window. We ordered a Nilgiris Chocolate Cake, a Banana Walnut Fudge and a fruit cake slice. The first to come was the fruit cake slice which was super soft and nice and tasty. The chocolate cake arrived next, it was quite big and had a hard chocolate on the side and a very nice looking icing on top. The cake had a good dose of chocolate and there was something missing. It was a little too hard for a cake priced at Rs 110 and I did not think that it was worth the price. The Banana Walnut tart too was quite tasty in its first two bites, but we could not take in more. All the cakes look yummy, but when you taste it, it leav

Sparky's

Sparky's

Its been quite a while since I went to this 'Fat Chef' with a tagline - 'Never trust a skinny chef! I love their friday buffets, but I have gone wrong quite a few times a la carte, but this time - BANG ON!!! After getting a few cakes, we suddenly felt very hungry and decided to get some good 'Americanized' food at Sparky's. Yes, I say Americanized, because almost everything here is Americanized. The Italian fare, the Mexican and the Carri bean are all Americanized, while the Hawaiian and other American stuff are just good here. Like I have mentioned in my original review of their buffet, if you are looking for Chicken Tikka Burgers, this is certainly the place to AVOID!!!!! So, on this visit, we ordered South of the Border Nachos, which is my favorite here. With generous helpings of nachos, chicken, refried beans with the right combo of salsa and veges, I have never gone wrong with the nachos here. We then ordered 'Philly Beef Steak sandwich and Chicke

Ecstacy - Mickael Besse

Ecstacy - Mickael Besse

Ecstacy by Mickael Besse, opened its doors to the Chennai Crowd at Satyam Cinemas quite sometime back and established itself as a high end dessert pub, so its time for relook at it. The menu has undergone considerable change, but the quality and the quantity (read minute) remain the same. The interiors are high class and elegant and the waiters know what is on the menu pretty well. With B&O music systems for your ears, this is definitely the best dessert pub in Chennai. My favorites here are the Flak - choco mousse set between ferro rocher like biscuit and topped with cream, oh they are yum!!!! The black forest cake is brilliant here with a tinge of rum in it. The florale desserts in various shapes and sizes are quite stunning, while the white chocolate mousse, the eclair and the likes are equally brilliant. Infact I am yet to have a single bad dish all these years, so it is quite reliable taste wise!!! Desserts are typically priced between Rs 60 and Rs 150 for a single piece

Cha Bar

Cha Bar

Cha bar, a cosy little chai shop inside the premises of The Oxford Bookstore can officially stake claim to being the best chill out zone in town. The place has literally no competition as far as its genre goes - its a chai shop inside a book store where the chai shop makes as much money (or even more) as the sale of books! With food coming from The Park, you can expect some good food here, but invariably the bar stomps you for choice and quality! The Ambiance is amazing and if you are book lover, this is by far THE BEST place for you! Its not a library, its not a coffee shop, its not a browsing center, but a some kind of a mix of the above in the right proportions! The staff are as friendly as ever and all the books are yours to sample (or read them fully) (except magazines)! There was a time when I had to, well, kill time and saw a sealed book that caught my attention. I asked the guy if he has an opened copy of the book and he promptly said 'No problem sir, you can open it'
